FastAmps Alpha 7 EV Charger Installation - Wem

A customer in Wem, Shropshire contacted FastAmps ahead of the delivery of a new hybrid vehicle and was referred to KJ Electrical for the installation of a home EV charger. After discussing the available options, a 7kW tethered FastAmps Alpha7 was selected.

An initial site survey was carried out to agree the most practical charger position, assess the existing electrical supply and determine the best route for the new circuit. The property had a TN-C-S supply with a 100A service fuse, with the existing consumer unit located inside the garage and the meter position directly outside.

A dedicated EV consumer unit was installed in the garage, positioned carefully so that it did not interfere with the operation of the garage door. The new supply incorporated a 40A Type A bidirectional RCBO, surge protection and a main switch, with the circuit supplied using EV Ultra cable.

Dedicated EV Supply & Dynamic Load Monitoring

The installation also included a CT clamp for dynamic load monitoring. This monitors the total electricity demand of the property and allows the charger to automatically reduce its charging rate if necessary, helping to prevent the incoming supply from being overloaded.

EV Ultra cable was used because it incorporates both the power conductors and data cores within a single cable. This allowed the load-monitoring connection to be installed neatly without the need for a separate external data cable.

The Alpha7 charger and tethered cable holder were positioned beside the existing meter cabinets in the location requested by the customer. Space was relatively limited, so careful positioning was required to keep the installation practical and accessible.

Testing, Commissioning & App Setup

Once installation was complete, the new circuit and charger were fully tested and the appropriate electrical certification produced.

The customer was then assisted with setting up the FastAmps app, including the installer settings for the property supply. We also demonstrated timed charging and recommended entering the correct electricity tariff so that charging costs can be monitored through the app.

The Alpha7 can also work alongside a future solar PV installation, allowing surplus generated energy to be directed towards vehicle charging where the system is configured to do so.
