One of the first questions customers understandably ask is how much an electrician is likely to cost. The difficulty is that electrical work can vary considerably from one property to another.
Rather than publishing a rigid price list that may not apply to your installation, this page explains how I normally price common work and gives a small number of useful guide figures for customers in Shrewsbury and the surrounding area.
For faults, repairs and smaller electrical problems, I normally work on a straightforward daytime call-out basis.
The £65 call-out includes up to the first hour spent investigating or carrying out the specific electrical work or fault the visit was booked for.
Where the original job can sensibly be completed during the visit and requires a second hour, this is normally charged at £35 plus materials.
If the work is likely to extend beyond two hours, I will normally explain what has been found and agree a price for completing the job before proceeding.
Electrical Installation Condition Reports also vary according to the size and complexity of the property, but the figures below give a useful indication for a straightforward domestic installation.
Typical guide price for a standard domestic property with a straightforward electrical installation.
Again, this assumes a reasonably standard installation without significant additional distribution equipment.
Larger homes will generally take longer to inspect and test and are priced accordingly.
Sub-boards, outbuildings and more complex installations increase the amount of inspection and testing required.
You can read more about what is involved on my EICR & Electrical Testing page .
Two jobs that sound identical over the phone can be very different once the existing installation, access and cable routes are taken into account.
For larger jobs I generally prefer to assess what is required and agree a total price rather than simply charging an open-ended hourly rate. This gives both of us a much clearer understanding of the work and expected cost.
The price depends on the number of circuits, existing equipment, required protection and any issues discovered with the installation.
Consumer unit upgrades in Shrewsbury →Cable length, cable route, existing consumer unit, load management and the charger selected can all affect the final price.
EV charger installation →These systems are designed around the property, electrical supply and customer requirements, so they are individually assessed and quoted.
Solar PV & battery storage →The size of the property, number of points, level of finish, occupancy and access all need to be considered before a meaningful quotation can be provided.
If a call-out identifies a larger problem, I will not simply continue accumulating hourly charges without discussing it with you.
I assess the original fault or work the visit was booked for.
If more substantial work is required, I explain what I have found and what I recommend.
For larger work, a total price is normally discussed and agreed before the job continues.
No. The daytime call-out covers up to the first hour spent on the specific booked job. Any materials required are charged separately.
Of course you can ask, but the call-out is for the work originally booked. Any additional work would be discussed and agreed separately.
No. Hourly charging is mainly useful for smaller jobs and fault finding. Larger work is normally assessed and quoted as a complete job.
No. They are intended as helpful guide figures only. The actual price depends on the property and work required and will be confirmed before work proceeds.
Yes. KJ Electrical works throughout Shrewsbury and the surrounding Shropshire area. Travel and the nature of the work may occasionally affect pricing for jobs further away.
If you have an electrical job in Shrewsbury or the surrounding area, get in touch with a brief description of the work. Photos are often useful too, particularly for consumer units, existing equipment or proposed installation locations.
